Vinnie on Aydin Esen LIVING

Hard to explain why but there are CD's that take longer to sink in. I've had this CD for a while now... Not all but some portion of it I just couldn't get into before, it's not that I totally disliked it but you get the idea. It's like something about it was just hidden from me.

Anyone heard of the most unique Aydin Esen from Turkey? As per the Vital Information's LINKS, he's toured with Steve Smith before.

This 2000 project titled LIVING just sunk in deeper for me, so I thought I'd share on that a little.

Has anyone here ever heard Vinnie play Free Jazz?? There are a few tunes on the the CD that are really FREE where VInnie's improvisational flare shines big time. Demonstrating once again how Vinnie can play it all and play it to a level reached by very few others. If there is a muscial context calling for great mastering of drumming ability in EVERY sense, this CD is it, as in its moments of spontenuous creativity. Vinnie pulls some wicked technical ideas yes... But extremely MUSICAL within the immediate context he's in. It confirms once again that the technic he's worked hard to attain is firmly grounded IN HIM, the beauty of it is in the vocabulary he pulls when he "talks" back to Aydin Esen and Miroslav Vitous (Call it FROM MARS improv), it just fits!! Nothing new here I know, but hey, very much enjoyable listening to.

Then there is this beautiful ballad exposing Vinnie's touch, taste and musicianship. It reminded me of what Steve had said about Vinnie's performance on the Alan Pasqua Trio Boot Leg. "His sensitivity to what’s being played and how that effects what he plays is what's impressive."

The down side for me is the drum sound, especially the snare. I find the drums got a little lost in the mix somehow.

Anyone else dig this CD??

Vinnie is 1 of the most wicked set players EVAR - of all time.
However [& I'm about to "step in it" or "open mouth/insert foot," i suppose [img]wink.gif[/img] ], sometimes [as brilliant as he is] in the PAST he tended often to play things sometimnes for the sake of the fact that he COULD...if you listen to some parts on Holdsworth's Secrets, for one example, he sometimes overplays in my book, moreso than Chad or Husband...drumistic things that don't always fit context-wise [because "he CAN," to quote Billy Ward, MDF '00]...[however; having opened my big mouth & said that, i wish I could "overplay" w HALF as much of his ability [img]wink.gif[/img] ...& regardless, Secrets is still breath-takingly mind-boggling]...

Has anyone else here heard the "Ryles1/Boston/Berklee[?] '86" mp3 boot?! *sheesh* [img]graemlins/thumbs_up.gif[/img]

Vinnie overplays quite freely on Buell Neidlinger's Big Drum CD. I liked his Tony-on-acid-Elvin-on-speed approach a lot at first but find it hard to listen to now.

Big Drum is so out there. What was up with the guys who looked like they were at a summer camp on the cover? Vinnie's face on the Bass Drum? Are we sure he actually graced that piece of, ahem? work? I was very disappointed with it, because even Vinnie in his great ingenuity was unable to add anything redeeming to that album. MHO.

If there is a style/context you're "allowed" to play a lot (wouldn't say overplay in this case [img]wink.gif[/img] ) is Holdsworth's... Maybe there are other instances where VInnie may indeed "overplay", sure... But not Holdsworth's Secret, in my book anyways. Do you have the same opinion on Wardenclyffe Tower's track titled "against the clock"? Just curious...

We often hear "There is a time and a place"... IMHO... Holdsworth's SECRET was the time and place... [img]biggrin.gif[/img] [img]biggrin.gif[/img] [img]biggrin.gif[/img]
